HOUSTON ASSIGNS FIVE TO SOLAR BEARS
Captain of 2011-12 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Joins the
Orlando, FL - The Orlando Solar Bears announced today that
Sean Lorenz, the captain of Notre Dame last season, has been
assigned to the team. In addition, the Solar Bears have
agreed to terms with forward Ryan Ginand and have added forward
C.J. Severyn on a PTO (Professional Tryout) contract and
defenseman Chris Haltigin on an ATO (Amateur Tryout) contract.
Houston also assigned forwards Josh Caron and Nick Petersen,
and defensemen Corbin Baldwin, and Kyle Medvec. The Solar Bears
have released forwards Gary Klapkowski and Mathieu
Lorenz (6'1", 195 lbs.) got his first taste of professional
action when he skated in two games with the Houston Aeros (AHL)
at the end of last season. From Littleton, Colorado, Lorenz was
the captain at Notre Dame last year, and as a junior in 2010-11
he lead his team in plus/minus (+32) and blocked shots (57). He
was drafted by the Minnesota Wild in the fourth round in the
2008 NHL entry draft.
Ginand (5'9", 165 lbs.) collected 51 points (27 goals, 24
assists) in 44 games for Vipiteno in the Italian league last
season. The fourth-year pro dressed in 108 games with Trenton
(ECHL) from 2009-11, tallying 43 goals and 59 assists for 102
points. In 2010-11, he led Trenton in goals (29) and assists
(46) while finishing sixth in the ECHL in points (75).
Severyn (6'0", 185 lbs.) joins the Solar Bears after scoring 15
points (five goals, 10 assists) with the Utah Grizzlies last
year. Prior to turning pro, the Beaver, Pennsylvania, native
completed four seasons at Ohio State University, scoring 41
points in 140 games with the Buckeyes. Severyn played for both
the U.S. Under-17 and Under-18 teams from 2005-07, and was a
seventh round draft choice of the Calgary Flames in 2007.
Haltigin, (6'1", 194 lbs.) served as the captain at RIT
(Rochester Institute of Technology) last year, where finished
lead all team defensemen with 16 assists and 21 points and was
named to the AHA Second All-Conference team. Hailing from
Oakville, Ontario, Haltigin was named an alternate captain as a
junior in 2010-11, and helped RIT to an AHA (Atlantic Hockey
Association) championship with 11 goals and 13 assists for 24
points in 2009-10.
Caron (6'4", 215 lbs.) split last season between the Kamloops
Blazers and Everett Silvertips (WHL) where he had a combined
159 PIM, which placed him eighth in the WHL. In 2009-10 the
Campbell River, British Columbia, native played in 60 games for
the Blazers and posted 190 PIM.
Petersen (6'2", 186 lbs) is entering his third professional
season after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the
fourth round during the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He appeared in
seven games with the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) last year, picking
up four goals and five assists for nine points. The Wakefield,
Quebec, native played 40 games for the Nailers in 2010-11,
racking up 24 goals and 33 assists for 57 points. In 75 AHL
games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, Petersen has
scored 41 points (16 goals, 25 assists).
Baldwin (6'5", 215 lbs.) is entering his first professional
season after spending four years with the Spokane Chiefs in the
WHL (Western Hockey League). Last season, Winnipeg, Manitoba,
native led the Chiefs with a +35 rating, set career highs in
goals (6), assists (27), and points (33), and finished second
on the team with 128 PIM.
Medvec (6'5", 220 lbs.) appeared in 56 games with the Aeros in
2011-12, finishing with one goal and three assists. The 24
year-old defenseman led all University of Vermont blueliners in
goals (five) and points (15) as a junior in 2009-10.
The Orlando Solar Bears, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's
Minnesota Wild and AHL's Houston Aeros, are coming Out of
Hibernation and will play 36 regular season home games at the
2012 Street and Smith's Sports Business Journal Sports Facility
of the Year, the Amway Center, beginning October 20, 2012.
